Ashley continued farming with Jacky.
At that stage the farm enterprise was one of the largest producers of potatoes in the district. The 1992 drought had dealt a hard blow to some farmers including their company and they felt the need to diversify. With an existing potato wash plant the company Desmond Whitfield cc washed, sorted and marketed potatoes at one time for twelve surrounding farmers. Potatoes were marketed from Pretoria to King Williamstown countrywide.
Eventually the input costs and risk of dry land farming put an end to most farmers planting potatoes in the district.
Crop farms and a cattle farm were purchased to add to the existing land to make the operation more sustainable. Ashley was one of the first farmer’s to start with precision farming in the district keeping up to date with the latest technology.
Presently the Whitfield’s farm on 4583 ha’s of which 3418 ha’s is their own land. The balance is hired. 1830 ha’s is cultivated to maize sunflowers and soya beans. The Bonsmara herd runs on the 2753 ha’s of grazing.
Ashley has won various awards such as Potato Farmer of the Year, Western Free State Carnia Seed Grower of the Year and was a finalist for Grain Producer of the Year, South Africa, in 2008.
